Opportunity to become a Trustee

We are looking for a new trustee to join Curious Monkey

Curious Monkey is a proud theatre company of sanctuary, a lot of our work is with people from refugee and asylum seeker communities in the UK. It is important to us that our team of trustees is representative of the people we work with, so we are looking to welcome a new trustee with lived experience from a refugee or asylum seeking background to help us improve and grow.

Who Are Curious Monkey:

Curious Monkey is an award-winning theatre company based in the North East. We work with people from different communities to tell authentic stories, change minds, influence people, positively challenge prejudice to change systems and society. We make new plays (and sometimes films) that we co-create with communities and professional artists and we strive to put our creative work on a platform where it can be seen by people who can influence change.

We have an ongoing programme of work with groups of people who are seeking sanctuary through our Arriving Project and The Happiness Project many of whom we are now supporting to further their skills and develop as artists.

Trustee Role:

The role of a trustee is a voluntary position. (Expenses will be paid for any travel). Charities have trustees who are appointed representatives who nurture the organisation and help to keep it accountable.

It involves:

  • Attending meetings four times a year with other trustees and the management team of Curious Monkey (usually on Zoom)

  • Helping to support the Curious Monkey staff team to deliver the mission and values of the company successfully

  • Looking over financial reports with other trustees to make sure the charity is running effectively

  • Being part of sub groups to discuss particular topics/issues, e.g. finance, fundraising, diversity and equality, risk management (these are optional)

To apply you do not need to have experience of being on a board of trustees before, we will consider all applications equally and will support you on a journey to learn new skills in order to fulfil this role.

“Being a Curious Monkey trustee means that I get to help and support a fantastic organisation to achieve its goals. I've learned a lot about how arts organisations and charities work, met interesting people and experienced some great theatre!”

- Zeinab Lenton (current trustee of Curious Monkey)

In return you will:

  • Learn new skills

  • Be a part of the running of a friendly and exciting theatre company

  • Be working with a team of people who are all striving for social change

We can offer support and buddying for new trustees. We will try to be as flexible as possible and we are keen to hear from people even if you may not be able to commit to this role in the long term.

To apply please send an email or a short video of yourself telling us:

  • A bit about you

  • What skills you could bring to the organisation

  • Why you would like to become a trustee of Curious Monkey

  • Please include a CV of your experience if you have one

Please send this to Amy Golding at amy@curiousmonkeytheatre.com by Friday 27th November. We will then invite you to come and have a conversation with us. If you would like to chat about the role more please do contact Amy by email and she will arrange to give you a call.
You can find out more about the company on our projects, productions, and about us pages.

We look forward to hearing from you.

*Curious Monkey is a charity and a Theatre Company of Sanctuary which means we are committed to being an open, welcoming and safe place for people seeking sanctuary who have come to the UK fleeing violence and persecution. We offer people creative experiences to get involved with, social and cultural trips and the opportunity to lead projects.
